Our Mission
The CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities seeks to create awareness and understanding of the connections between the everyday lives of urban citizens and their natural world, leading to the discovery and use of cities like New York as a learning laboratory to create a sustainable future for cities worldwide.

Making Research And Information Available To All

The Institute's Knowledge Network, an online resource comprised of environmental topic primers, an extensive bibliography of resources, and links to related organizations, gives students and educators access to an abundance of information about the environment and urban sustainability. Our Institute commissions experts in environmental education to create course modules and lectures made available through the Knowledge Network to all educators in the CUNY system for use in their classes and curriculum. The Knowledge Network is an ideal course companion and academic resource for students, and serves as an interactive repository for urban sustainability research data available to researchers, educators, students, and citizen scientists worldwide.

Creating New Knowledge
The core projects of the Institute, focusing on climate change and energy use, consumption of resources, and cities by the coast, hone in on central issues of societal concern. The Institute brings together scientists, researchers, educators and students at the forefront of study in these areas to create cutting edge primary research for publication, presentation, and teaching use. In addition to producing new scientific knowledge, the core projects also produce policy recommendations, journal articles, and discussion papers, all available to our students, educators, and the public through our website and office.

Changing The Way People Think About The Environment
Through workshops, seminars, lectures and discussions featuring some of the most prominent members of the environmental community, we reach out to a broad student audience, seeking to change the way people think about the environment. We give researchers and educators not only a wealth of information, but also access to a community of others using and evaluating data and information related to our core projects and mission. Also, with our environmental internship program, we help students find environmental internships citywide to further their education through hands-on learning outside the classroom, enhancing future career opportunities.
